The OpenDocument Format (ODF) has been approved as OASIS and ISO standards and is being implemented by a growing number of applications including OpenOffice.org, StarOffice, KOffice, IBM Workplace, and Google Docs & Spreadsheets. Via plug-ins, ODF support is also available for Microsoft Office and Firefox. OpenOffice.org, as just one implementation of ODF, has been downloaded more than 85M times and is being used by various ministries and city councils around the globe. The ODF Alliance has already more than 410 member organizations in more than 50 countries, and Gartner predicts that „By 2010, ODF document exchange will be required by 50 percent of government and 20 percent of commercial organizations (0.7 probability).” Thus, ODF is a promising standard with growing momentum. This presentation gives an overview about the OpenDocument Format (ODF) OASIS and ISO standard, its history, benefits, and adoption by users, vendors, and applications. In addition, this session will provide insights into available resources, use cases, and the future of ODF. The talk will also illustrate how ODF can enable interoperability across applications and platforms.
