The success of open standards and interoperability is often dependant upon the quick adoption of those standards by a large number of organizations. Experience has shown that a common open implementation of a standard is the quickest way to gain rapid adoption. In fact, open standards and open source implementations are important to the success of driving forward any new technology innovations. The Eclipse community has more than 5 years of experience of implementing open standards into open source projects. This presentation will discuss how Eclipse creates ‘Open Innovation Networks’ that comprise of different, sometimes competing organizations, to drive forward the implementation of new technology innovations. The session will go into details of the governance model, licensing and development process used at Eclipse. It will also detailed how Eclipse has fostered a community that allows for distributed development across organizational, geographical and language barriers.
