Putting the Pieces Together - A Collaboration Portal
Mon-1500-Kolker-Putting the pieces together - A Collaboration Portal3.pdf

Open Source Applications have been developed which are useful as stand-alones, but can be even more so if integrated or embedded in a common framework. "One stop shopping" is often the sales pitch used when proposing a portal, and Open Source provides the tools under which that can occur. Starting as a research project in Open Source tool integration, the ITS&S Collaboration Portal grew into a single site which provides single signon, access to timecards and email, news, stocks and weather, two way communications between management and workers using a blog, a wiki which serves as a unit corporate memory, a BBS for technical Q and A, document management, workflow and many other pieces. Where proprietary applications couldn't be fully integrated into the portal, they were embedded in the framework, providing a common look and feel if not full single sign-on integration. The Collaboration Portal continues to be in development, gaining new and updated pieces as new and updated Open Source applications are found which fit our needs. Every organization is different, and your Collaboration Portal wouldn't look like ours, but the ability to take building blocks of Open Source software and meld them together is a powerful tool providing a custom solution in a COTS or near-COTS timeframe.
